Chairman’s Report 2008
Just after Christmas last year a meeting between a small number of us initiated the club and set us on our way. Most of those founder members are still with us I’m pleased to report!! We are very grateful to the Knighton Hotel who let us use their facilities free of charge all year – it’s a pity that in the winter it has been so cold. WE are also grateful to the Welsh Bridge Union and in particular Neville who lent us the equipment we needed to get started. We have now been able to raise enough table money to buy everything we have needed to set up the club.
Numbers at our Club Evenings have ranged from a low of 6 players to a maximum of 24, while we have around 45 players “on the books”. We have been able to play competitively with a mixture of pair and individual movements. We generally seem to be around 3 or 4 tables. I am very grateful to Kevin who has taken on the role of our main Director.
During the year we have entered the World Sims Pairs competition, the WBU Autumn Pairs, and have been represented at Mid Wales Competitions – a special mention of Jack who won the mid Wales singles at Aberystwyth. We have also formed 2 teams to play in the newly formed Mid Wales League and our “A” team is doing very well with one win and one draw to their name. The “B” team has yet to play a game but will get going after Christmas. I hope that as a result of this meeting we will have a competitions secretary to take on the organisation of these competitions.
We arranged a training course for Bridge Directors so that 4 of us have a basic understanding of Directing which will be useful to the club. (Kevin, Kay, Lionel, Richard).
Neville has brought us into the technological age with our own web site onto which we are now putting our weekly results. WELSHBRIDGEWEBS.
The Bridge Drive we arranged in the Autumn was a great success- the Knighton Hotel came up trumps with the meal if not with the heating!!! We raise £390 for the Air Ambulance and had 12 tables which hopefully raised the clubs profile in the area and gained us some publicity in the local press.
And so on to next year. We have found a warm and inviting Pub for our evenings and hope that 2009 will bring in new members and that we will increase our regular attendance. We aim to continue to have a good mix of fun and competition and encourage new players.
So finally I would like to thank everyone who has taken on roles within the organisation of the Club – I should make a special mention of Mary as secretary and Tone as assistant treasurer.
